What's an Absentee Ballot Application?

An ABA lets any registered Alaska voter request to vote from home by mail — no trip to a polling place required. It's simple, nonpartisan, and open to any eligible voter for any reason.

Absentee ballots give people another way to vote — easier for anyone who's busy, traveling, or sick on Election Day. Increasing turnout in rural Alaska is a top priority, and our elections are often decided by just a handful of votes.

An official State of Alaska form

The ABA is an official State of Alaska, Division of Elections form that gets submitted to the state. Because it's a government document, filling it out correctly matters — the app guides you through every field so each application goes through cleanly and gets you paid.

Three ways to help someone apply

Pick whatever fits the moment. The digital methods are fastest and let you help far more people.

Preferred

In-person, on the app

Open the ABA app and fill out the form together with the voter. They sign right on your device screen with a finger or stylus. The app walks you through every field.

Highly encouraged

Remote signature link or QR code

Fill out the form on your phone, tablet, or laptop, then send the voter a one-time, 15-minute signature link — or show them a QR code — so they sign on their own device. You don't need to be side by side. It's also great for areas with limited internet: the voter only needs a moment of connection to sign. This is how one Hand can help their whole network.

Available

Paper form

A physical paper option exists if someone truly prefers pen and paper. It's the slowest route, so we recommend one of the digital methods whenever you can.

Who's eligible & the rules

A few simple rules keep every application valid — and make sure you get paid for the work you do.

Who's eligible

The voter you help must be:

  • A U.S. citizen, 18 or older (or within 90 days of turning 18)
  • A resident of rural Alaska — outside Anchorage, Wasilla/Palmer, Fairbanks, and Juneau
  • Someone who hasn't already completed an ABA this year

For a form to be approved

  • The voter signs the application themselves — you can never sign on someone's behalf.
  • The information is accurate and complete. Forms we have reason to believe are fraudulent won't be approved.
  • You stay strictly nonpartisan — never discussing candidates, parties, or issues, or trying to influence anyone's vote.

From rural Alaska but living in town? You can still take part. You don't have to live in a rural community to be a Hand — use the remote signature link or QR code to help eligible rural Alaska voters back home, and grow your earnings through the referral program.

Strictly nonpartisan. Hands help with the application only — never with candidates, parties, or issues, and never signing on a voter's behalf. This protects you, the person you're helping, and the whole program. If someone doesn't want to apply, that's completely okay.
